If you’re just starting out in Hollow Knight: Silksong, it’s easy to lose your way among the twisting passages and sprawling chambers. A map becomes essential early on, but you won’t have one right from the beginning—you’ll need to track it down first. Here’s how to unlock and use the map in Silksong.
How to Open the Map in Silksong

To bring up the map, press LB on a controller or the Tab key if you’re on mouse and keyboard. The M key or the back button will open up the world map. However, when you first begin, you won’t actually have a map to view. Instead, you’ll need to buy it from Shakra, the singing bug merchant.
Where to Find the Map

You’ll find Shakra in Bone Marrow, near its top-left section, which also connects with the top-right part of Bone Bottom. As you approach, listen for her distinct singing voice—she hums “Lai Lai Lai”, which makes her easy to spot.
Speak to her and you’ll be able to purchase several mapping items:
- Map – 40 Rosary Beads
- Marrow Map – 50 Rosary Beads
- Quill – 50 Rosary Beads
- Compass – 70 Rosary Beads
Simply buying the basic map won’t be enough, as it starts off blank. The Marrow Map gives you a rough outline of the area, while the Quill lets you fill in places you’ve already explored. The Compass is also highly recommended since it shows your position on the map. Altogether, these core items will cost you 210 Rosary Beads.

You can also pick up extra tools:
- Bench Pins – 60 Rosary Beads (mark benches)
- Shell Markers – 40 Rosary Beads (mark points of interest)
Equipping the Compass

After purchasing the Compass, you’ll need to equip it to activate its function. To do this, sit at a bench, open your menu, and select the Compass from your item list. Once equipped, you’ll be able to see Hornet’s location on your map.
Continuing Your Journey
As you progress into new regions, you’ll need to find Shakra again to buy updated maps. Keep your ears open for her song—it’s the surest way to track her down and avoid getting lost in Silksong’s sprawling world.
