Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is a strong PC port overall, though it still has a few minor issues that will likely be fixed through future updates. While the game supports ultrawide monitors during gameplay, cutscenes are still limited, showing black bars on the sides.
Thankfully, a community modder named Lyall has released a patch that removes this limitation and improves ultrawide support.
Fix the Death Stranding 2 Ultrawide Cutscenes Issue
The patch expands aspect ratio support and removes pillarboxing in cutscenes when playing on ultrawide displays.
How to install the patch:
- Make sure Death Stranding 2 is not running on Steam
- Go to the Codeberg page and download the latest version (e.g., DeathStranding2Fix_0.0.2.zip) from the Downloads section
- Navigate to your game’s installation folder and extract the zip file using tools like WinRAR or 7-Zip
Typical installation path:
steamapps\common\DEATH STRANDING 2 - ON THE BEACH
Once installed, launch the game again and the black bars (both letterboxing and pillarboxing) will be removed from cutscenes.
The patch enables cutscenes to run properly in ultrawide formats (such as 32:9), delivering a much more immersive viewing experience without side bars.
Patch features (version 0.2):
- Adjust gameplay field of view (FOV)
- Support for any aspect ratio
- Disable cutscene pillarboxing
- Keep gameplay HUD constrained to 16:9
You can customize these features by editing the DeathStranding2Fix.ini file using a text editor like Notepad or Notepad++.
If you want to disable the patch entirely—or just certain features—you can either remove the patch files or set specific options to false in the configuration file.
All credit goes to Lyall for creating and testing the patch. Their work continues to be valuable for PC gamers, and updates may be released in the future with additional features.
It’s unlikely that Kojima Productions or Nixxes will officially remove the pillarboxing, as it may be part of the intended cinematic framing. For now, this patch remains the best solution.
That said, improvements like official FOV adjustment would still be welcome. Nixxes has already released a hotfix addressing some early technical issues, and based on their track record with PlayStation PC ports, more updates and fixes are expected in the near future.
