December may be well underway, but Square Enix continues to deliver major releases, and Octopath Traveler 0 stands out as one of the company’s strongest titles this year. Thanks to its low system requirements, it’s an excellent fit for handheld devices like the Steam Deck, and it also offers a generous demo for players to try beforehand.
However, if you played the demo on a Steam Deck or another Linux-based system, your save progress may not automatically carry over to the full version. Below is a step-by-step guide on how to manually transfer your Octopath Traveler 0 demo save files into the complete game.
Transfer Octopath Traveler 0 Demo Save Files on Steam Deck
To move your progress from the demo to the full release, you’ll need to locate the demo save files and copy them into the folder created for the main version of the game.
Follow these steps carefully:
- Launch the full version of Octopath Traveler 0 at least once to ensure the game generates the required local data folders.
- In Game Mode, open your Steam library.
- Select Octopath Traveler 0, press the options button, and choose Properties.
- Under the General tab, temporarily disable Steam Cloud.
- Switch to Desktop Mode on your Steam Deck and open Dolphin (the file explorer).
- Navigate to the following directory:
primary/steamapps/compatdata/3014330/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Documents/My Games/Octopath_Traveler0/Steam/[STEAM ID]/SaveGames/ - Copy all files with the .sav extension.
- Now navigate to the full game’s save directory:
primary/steamapps/compatdata/3014320/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Documents/My Games/Octopath_Traveler0/Steam/[STEAM ID]/SaveGames/ - Paste the copied save files into this folder and remove “Trial_” from each .sav filename.
- Return to Game Mode and launch Octopath Traveler 0.
- Your save data should now load correctly in the full game.
- Once confirmed, exit the game, return to Properties, and re-enable Steam Cloud.
- Launch the game again and select local saves when prompted to upload them to the cloud.
This issue appears to be fairly common with demo versions on Steam Deck and other Linux-based systems, and locating the correct save files can be confusing. Remember that 3014330 is the Steam App ID for the demo, while 3014320 corresponds to the full release.
For now, manually moving files remains the only solution, whether you’re using a Steam Deck, Proton, or another Linux environment. While it would be nice to see an official fix, this workaround gets the job done.
