Tracking down Volatile Flintbeetles is one of the early quests in Hollow Knight: Silksong. The quest doesn’t provide directions, leaving you to locate and defeat three dangerous Flintbeetles on your own. Here’s a complete guide to all their locations and tips for beating them.
Starting the Volatile Flintbeetle Quest
To begin, accept the quest from the Wish Board in Bone Bottom Village. You’ll need to track down and defeat three Volatile Flintbeetles.
Normally, you locate them by exploring The Marrow and interacting with their droppings. These marks will point you toward each Flintbeetle’s position.
However, since their locations are fixed, you can skip the tracking process and head straight to the following spots. Keep in mind, these Flintbeetles are dangerous and can easily surprise you if you’re unprepared.

The first beetle can be found by interacting with the droppings near the first bench in The Marrow. This leads you to a chamber above and to the left.
The beetle is lodged in the ceiling. The terrain can make the fight tricky, but you can retreat if needed and use other enemies to heal.
Volatile Flintbeetle #2
The second beetle is located in the same upper-left area of The Marrow where one of the Lost Fleas is found.
It is lodged in the wall at the top right. Clear out all other enemies first—they can obstruct your retreat and complicate the fight.
Volatile Flintbeetle #3
The third and final beetle can be found near the right side of The Marrow, also embedded in a wall.
By this point, you should have a better handle on the fight, but it’s still worth following some basic tips.
How to Defeat Volatile Flintbeetles
Watch out for three main attacks:
- Charge Attack with Explosive Trail – Better to dodge backward than approach from behind, as the explosive trail can hit you.
- Jumping Attack with Explosive Arc – Stand still or move into the small safe area under the arc, or step back to avoid damage.
- Lava Bullet Rain – The beetle launches 4–6 lava bullets in arcs on both sides. Dodge with quick reflexes or take a step back for safety.
⚠️ Note: They explode when defeated, so be careful if your health is low.
Quest Reward
After defeating all three Flintbeetles and collecting their drops, return to the Wish Board to claim your reward: a Memory Locket.
Memory Lockets allow you to expand your Charm slots. Sit at a bench to unlock one of the empty slots and equip your new charms.
