How to Find and Defeat the Skull Tyrant in Hollow Knight Silksong

The Terrible Tyrant quest tasks you with tracking down and defeating the Skull Tyrant, a fearsome predator that has been terrorizing the caverns of the Marrow. This boss can be tricky to locate and even harder to bring down, so here’s a straightforward guide to completing the quest.

How to Start the Terrible Tyrant Quest

You’ll unlock the Terrible Tyrant quest on the Wish board after obtaining a specific ability in the Shellwood region. Once you return to the board, you’ll find the new task: hunt the Skull Tyrant lurking in the Marrow.

How to Find the Skull Tyrant

After fully exploring the Marrow, there will still be two regions left to check with your newly acquired climbing skill.

  • The entrance is marked with a blue circle on the map.
  • The Skull Tyrant’s lair is shown with a red circle.

Head to the lower entrance near the Deep Docks and push leftward through the caverns. The path is narrow and filled with Kiliks and Skull Brutes. You’ll likely take some damage, so move quickly to reduce health loss.

When you reach the upper chamber, go left first to unlock a shortcut and rest at the nearby bench. This makes retries much easier. After that, head right to face the Skull Tyrant.

How to Defeat the Skull Tyrant

The Skull Tyrant only has three main attacks, and while they’re not hard to dodge, the challenge comes from its high HP and the fact that each hit costs you two Masks of health.

1. Charge Attack

The Skull Tyrant steps back before charging forward. It looks intimidating but can be avoided by simply jumping over it. Keep your distance so you have room to leap.

2. Jump Attack

The boss pauses, then leaps at your position, knocking rocks loose. This move is easy to predict and punish: land a few hits (1–3) before backing off. The real skill lies in distinguishing between this and the charge attack.

3. Rock Fall Attack

At times, the Tyrant will bounce in place, dislodging rubble that falls from above. Dodge the debris and prepare to punish once the boss resumes its other attacks.

This fight demands patience. If you’re low on Silk or overwhelmed, you can retreat to the lower chamber and try to cheese the fight, though this usually complicates things. A slow and steady approach is best.

Terrible Tyrant Quest Reward

When you turn in the quest at Bone Bottom village, you’ll receive the Heavy Rosary Necklace. Like the regular Rosary Necklace, it’s a consumable, but this one grants 220 Rosaries when used. Since you don’t lose it on death, it’s best to save it for when you truly need it.
