World of Warcraft: Midnight “Brought Me to the Verge of Tears,” Says Production Director — Could Be the Most Important Expansion in 10 Years

World of Warcraft developers have high expectations for the upcoming Midnight expansion, which will finally introduce housing to the two-decade-old MMO when it launches fully on March 2, 2026. Since early access began on December 2, some players are already exploring what promises to be a highly customizable experience. But the creators behind Midnight believe the expansion could be even more significant than that.

“I think Midnight really has the potential to be our best expansion ever,” WoW game director Ion Hazzikostas told ScreenRant. “I can’t wait for people to experience the full stakes of the story and to see millions of people unleashed upon housing and all the rest. Before this, my high-water mark is probably Legion,” the transformative 2016 expansion. “But I think this one can top it.”

Challenges and Ambition
Principal game designer Jesse Kurlancheek acknowledges that large-scale features like housing bring significant challenges: “Just doing a feature this large naturally crosses expansion boundaries, figuring out tech solutions for problems we didn’t even know we would have years ago.” Still, the team sees housing as “just another pillar of WoW gameplay.”

Nostalgia and Emotion
Blizzard’s efforts seem to be resonating internally as well. Associate production director Garth DeAngelis shared that wandering through Eversong Woods in Midnight “almost brought me to the verge of tears with how nostalgic it felt,” despite being relatively new to WoW.

With housing and other new features, Midnight could mark a major milestone for the MMO, combining nostalgia, innovation, and a level of player freedom not previously seen in World of Warcraft.
