Undertale Demo Gets a “Faithful” Fan-Made Game Boy Color Demake, Playable Now

Undertale, already a love letter to SNES RPG EarthBound, has been taken even further by fans, who have ported the game to the 8-bit Game Boy Color.

Undertale carries a heavy Nintendo influence in its DNA, clearly inspired by EarthBound (and to a lesser extent Mario & Luigi). Some of developer Toby Fox’s earliest works were EarthBound romhacks, including the first version of the iconic boss fight theme Megalovania. While Undertale may be too complex to have existed on the SNES or other classic Nintendo consoles, fans haven’t let that stop them.

Last month, Deltarune fans released a romhack of Chapter 1 for EarthBound, completing a full-circle tribute to Toby Fox’s beginnings. Now, fans are pushing even further by bringing Undertale to less powerful hardware.

As reported by Retro Dodo, the Undertale GB project delivers a demo for the 8-bit handheld, aiming to “recreate the original’s core mechanics, pixel art style, and iconic soundtrack within the limitations of retro hardware.” While it’s not yet the full game, developer Aki hopes to eventually demake the entirety of Undertale.

The trailer on the game’s Itch.io page shows some adjustments from the original. For instance, the enemy attack screen—where players control their heart to avoid attacks in a bullet hell-like fashion—now fills the entire screen rather than appearing in a popup window. The game’s music has also been adapted to fit the Game Boy Color’s soundchip.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first Toby Fox-adjacent Game Boy Color demake. Earlier this year, fans ported Deltarune Chapter 1 to the same platform, continuing the trend of creative fan tributes.
