Despite continued silence around a long-rumored Final Fantasy 9 remake, a different kind of revival appears to be underway. The animated series based on the classic JRPG—once believed to be cancelled—has reportedly returned to active production and is now targeting a 2028 release.
Originally announced in 2021, the Final Fantasy 9 animated series was in development at French production company Cyber Group Studios, known for producing Mini Ninjas based on IO Interactive’s franchise. Unfortunately, Cyber Group Studios shut down earlier this year, seemingly taking the project with it and leaving fans assuming the series was dead.
However, new information suggests otherwise. According to a report from French magazine Écran Total—first spotted by BlueSky user ensis—the animated series has been revived and is now being produced by Euro Visual. The report states that the show will be a 2D animated series, consisting of 13 episodes, each running 22 minutes, with a planned release window set for 2028.
Écran Total also provides a plot synopsis, revealing that the series will follow six Black Mages, who are described as the children of Final Fantasy 9 protagonist Vivi. This narrative direction lines up closely with previously leaked information that surfaced earlier this year.
As noted by RPG Site, the official synopsis mirrors leaked details surrounding a project titled “Final Fantasy 9: The Black Mages’ Legacy.” That leak included key artwork depicting six Black Mages—one of whom appears frozen—an image that strongly matches both the leaked and newly reported story elements.
While this development likely has no direct connection to the long-rumored Final Fantasy 9 remake, the survival of the animated series after its original studio’s collapse offers a small spark of hope. For fans holding onto optimism, the project’s resurrection may suggest that Square Enix’s affection for Final Fantasy 9 is far from fading—and that the elusive remake might still emerge someday.
