It’s rare to hear an actor, especially one known for video game roles, speak positively about generative AI in acting. Yet Jim High, who voices the antagonist Erik in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, envisions a future where AI can enhance creative work without replacing human jobs.
Speaking to GamesRadar+, High acknowledges both the potential and the risks of AI in the industry:
“I’m quite cynical about it, in that I think it will change things, and I think it will change things quite rapidly,” he says.
While many in industries vulnerable to AI feel anxious about displacement, High also sees opportunities. He highlights the potential for actors to explore multiple characters and performances using motion capture and AI-assisted tools:
“But I’m also quite optimistic in the opportunities that that will bring, like we were talking about the opportunities you can play different characters in different ways with mocap. I think that’s only going to increase.”
High emphasizes that creative control will remain with humans:
“My hope is that that power will come to the creator. I think they’re always – for performances and things like that – you’re always going to need a puppeteer of some sort, whether that’s inside it, or controlling it with dials, and what have you. So I don’t think that creative process will ever go away, I hope. But there’s this possibility for some amazing creative stuff to happen, as well as a lot of changes.”
While major publishers like Ubisoft, EA, and Take-Two are embracing AI for video games, High’s perspective is measured: acknowledging both the risks and the creative potential, while keeping humans at the center of the artistic process.
