Tomb Raider co-creator Paul Douglas has shared his thoughts on the two upcoming Tomb Raider games revealed at The Game Awards 2025. While some fans were initially disappointed that the next entry, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, would be another remake of the original game, Douglas highlighted that a completely new entry, Tomb Raider: Catalyst, will also be released, giving players the “best of both worlds.”
The original Tomb Raider has seen numerous reboots, remasters, and re-releases, including the 2024 Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered Collection. Responding on Bluesky, Douglas wrote:
“She’s back apparently. Personally I’d prefer exploring new lost worlds than another remake/remaster/reimagining of something we crafted under intense duress in the 90’s. Fingers crossed, eh. Dinosaurs will always be cool though…”
Lara Croft’s first adventure was developed by a team of just six people over 18 months, including six months of intense crunch, during which some team members slept in the office, under desks, or even in cupboards, as recounted by composer Nathan McCree.
Douglas and co-creator Toby Gard reportedly fell out with publisher Eidos Interactive over marketing disagreements. Gard wanted Lara to appear “sophisticated, cool, collected, in control,” rather than a sexualized character. Programmer Gavin Rummery recalled that after being dismissed by Eidos, Gard and Douglas refused to work on the Tomb Raider sequel and left Core Design shortly after.
Despite his initial reservations about remakes, Douglas later expressed optimism following the trailer for Tomb Raider: Catalyst, calling the pair of upcoming games the “best of both worlds.” He wrote:
“There needs to be another 90%+ TR after all this time… I’m quite looking forward to seeing both new games now. Visually they are stunning, something we only dreamed of 30 years ago. We will have to wait and see if the gameplay and resulting feelings of exploration and adventure are as good.”
The original Tomb Raider remains the only game in the series with a Metacritic score over 90, rating 91. Other titles, including the Survivor reboot trilogy, were also well received, with Rise of the Tomb Raider scoring 88.
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is scheduled to launch next year, while Tomb Raider: Catalyst is expected to release in 2027.
