Fishing is a staple mechanic in most survival games, and while Hytale does include fishing, it approaches the activity a bit differently than you might expect. Instead of traditional fishing rods and minigames, Hytale focuses on traps and alternative methods. Here’s everything you need to know about fishing in Hytale.
Can You Fish in Hytale?
Yes—and no. You can catch fish in Hytale, but there is currently no traditional fishing rod or fishing minigame in the base game. Instead, fishing is done primarily through Fishing Traps or by manually attacking fish in shallow water.
If you’re looking for a more classic fishing experience, you can add it to your game by installing a fishing mod, which introduces fishing rods and a more familiar mechanic.
How to Catch Fish in Hytale

The main way to catch fish in Hytale is by using Fishing Traps. These are crafted at the Farmer’s Workbench. To do this, you first need to craft a Farmer’s Workbench from a regular Workbench and then upgrade it to level 2.
Upgrading the Farmer’s Workbench to level 2 costs:
- 50 Essence of Life
- 5 Wheat
- 5 Lettuce
- 5 Softwood Trunks
You can gather large amounts of Essence of Life by learning and practicing farming in Hytale.
Each Fishing Trap requires:
- 10 Any Wood
- 50 Essence of Life
- 20 Plant Fibers
- 1 Iron Ingot
While this may seem costly, Fishing Traps are not consumed when used, making them a worthwhile long-term investment.
Once you’ve crafted a Fishing Trap, you can also create Fishing Bait and add it to the trap. Bait is optional and is only used to increase your chances of catching rarer fish.
Place the Fishing Trap in a body of water and return after about half a day. Interact with the trap to collect any fish it has caught.
Fish come in multiple rarities, and higher-rarity fish provide more Fish Meat. Legendary fish are especially valuable, yielding up to 16 Fish Meat, which can be grilled and eaten.
Alternatively, you can manually catch fish by attacking them in shallow water where fish spawn. This method is inefficient, but it does technically work as a form of fishing.
Tips for Fishing in Hytale
Fish generally do not spawn in shallow water or in bodies of water created by players. For the best results, look for naturally generated water sources that are deeper than four blocks and allow for full submersion. Rivers and oceans are the most reliable locations for fish spawns and effective trap use.
Fishing Bait is not required for Fishing Traps to work, but it does improve both the catch rate and the likelihood of finding rarer fish. Even without bait, traps will still function properly.
Currently, known fish in Hytale include:
- Catfish
- Clownfish
- Corrupted Fish
- Fish (Disambiguation)
- Man-O-War
- Moray Eel
- Pike
- Piranha
- Pufferfish
- Rainbow Trout
- Regal Tang
- Shark
Hytale Fishing Mods
While traditional fishing isn’t officially part of Hytale yet, the Gone Fishing mod adds fishing rods and rod-based fishing mechanics to the game. The mod is available on CurseForge and can be installed using standard Hytale modding tools.
With this mod, you can craft a fishing rod using two Sticks and three Linen Scraps. To fish, equip the rod and right-click while aiming at water to cast a bobber. When a fish bites, the bobber will be pulled underwater, and you can right-click again to reel the fish in. The mod currently allows you to catch any fish available in the base game.
