“We Are More Effective Than Bigger Teams”: Rebel Wolves on Keeping the Studio Small Ahead of Blood of Dawnwalker

Ahead of the release of Blood of Dawnwalker next year, Rebel Wolves founder and The Witcher 3 director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz has made it clear that he doesn’t want the studio to grow significantly. This approach isn’t just a response to industry uncertainty—it’s also a deliberate creative decision.

Tomaszkiewicz explained the advantages of maintaining a relatively small team. Earlier this year, creative director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz revealed Rebel Wolves employed around 120 people; that number has since grown to 155.

“I hoped we could stay with 80 or 90 of us,” Konrad said. “But the game is ambitious, and we needed to gather more people.” Despite this growth, he emphasizes the importance of staying personally engaged with every part of the project and maintaining direct contact with the team.

“I don’t want to grow because I’m afraid we’ll lose the connection between management and developers,” he explained. “I like how it is right now. I like to work with people every day and create with them—not just watch the final effect from above. I want to work with people, not be a boss, but a leader.”

Tomaszkiewicz believes that the “creative fire” sparked by direct communication between leadership and team members is the most important factor in game development.

“When you set up the goal clearly and have a reasonably sized team to discuss it with, it’s easier to maintain motivation and the spirit of the project,” he added. “To be honest, we are more effective than bigger teams. In huge teams, you have to manage in a very granular way. Here, people feel responsible for parts of the game and take ownership—and I think that’s the most important thing.”

Blood of Dawnwalker is currently scheduled to launch on PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC in 2026.
