Duet Night Abyss features an overwhelming number of systems and mechanics that can easily confuse new players, especially those unfamiliar with looter-style games. This comprehensive beginner’s guide explains how progression works in Duet Night Abyss—including how to strengthen your characters, unlock new ones, and know what to farm first.
Character Progression Overview

To keep things simple and efficient, here’s a breakdown of the key mechanics that make your characters stronger in Duet Night Abyss:
Leveling and Ascending Characters
The most basic form of progression is leveling up your character. Each character can reach level 80, but you’ll need to ascend them every 10 levels using special forging materials. Ascending removes the level cap and allows you to continue progressing by spending Combat Melodies.
Leveling increases your base stats and also raises your Demon Wedge Tolerance cap, which determines how many Wedges your character can equip.
Demon Wedges

Demon Wedges act as the game’s main equipment system. Each Wedge provides unique stats or bonuses, and every character has eight available slots. However, you don’t always fill all eight because each Wedge adds to your total Tolerance—and you cannot exceed your character’s limit.
This means you’ll need to choose the best combination of Wedges for your build. Wedges can be upgraded to improve their stats and tolerance, but farming the ideal Wedges and upgrade materials can take significant time.
Certain characters also have special Wedge sets linked to their skills, such as:
- Psyche and her Icarus
- Berenica and her Ymir
- Lynn and her Hansel and Gretel
Upgrading Skills
Every character has several skills that can be upgraded from level 1 to 10 using specific forging materials. These materials can be found in commissions, quest rewards, or through crafting.
Some skill upgrades simply boost stats, while others unlock new passive effects that significantly impact gameplay. Pay attention to these passive upgrades—they can greatly enhance your character’s performance.
Intron (Prestige System)
Each character has Intron levels that can be increased up to level 6. Every Intron upgrade unlocks unique traits or abilities, making it a crucial part of long-term character progression.
To increase Intron levels, you must collect Secret Letters and Character Shards, essentially “unlocking” the same character again. Since characters are already hard to obtain, raising Intron levels takes time and persistence.
Weapons and Equipment
You’ll also need to farm melee and ranged weapons, which are acquired similarly to characters. Obtain Secret Letters for weapons from Nocturnal Echoes, then forge them at the Lunosmith in the Sanctuary.
Weapons can also be purchased directly from the shop using premium currency.
Weapon Demon Wedges
Weapons can also equip their own Demon Wedge sets—yes, your gear has gear! These Wedges are just as vital as your character’s and directly impact your overall build. You’ll need to farm these Wedges, gather materials, and upgrade them to strengthen your weapons further.
Just like characters, weapons have a Tolerance limit, so it’s best to focus on upgrading a few top-tier Wedges.
Weapon Smelting
Weapons can be smelted up to level 5, similar to the Intron system. To smelt a weapon, you’ll need duplicates of that same weapon. It’s a grind-heavy process, but necessary to reach maximum power.
Geniemon Supports
Finally, there are Geniemons, companion-like support creatures that provide passive bonuses and abilities. Some Geniemons increase consumable drop rates, while others enhance specific stats such as Pyro ATK for certain characters.
You can feed other Geniemons to strengthen them, unlocking new traits as they level up. Even though these are minor boosts, they add up and make a difference in endgame content.
Farming and Progression Tips
Once you understand these systems, your main goal is to:
- Progress through the story
- Farm materials from various activities
- Continuously upgrade your characters and weapons
You’ll spend a lot of time completing quests, side missions, and events while using your daily challenges to run Nocturnal Echoes for essential shards and materials.
Covert Commissions are great for repeatable material farming, while Echoes of Missteps provide high-value rewards but can be difficult early on. Focus on building up one strong character to help you advance faster.
Don’t forget to finish Day Planners and the Beginner’s Guide missions to claim extra daily rewards.
Progress in Duet Night Abyss is a long grind, but with steady farming and smart upgrades, you’ll gradually unlock more characters and builds—just as every looter shooter demands.
